PIRI Forum Wishlist / Changelog

posted Aug. 12, 2008 12:50:55 PM by    StumbleUpon Toolbar

There are so many suggestions coming in, I wanted to consolidate them and have a consistant list to show what's been changed or added.

- Color and theme change to something less "fresh install" Red (scroll to bottom left of page to change it)
- 'Latest post' module Red
- Youtube in-post code for putting youtube videos in posts red (standard parse)
- User avatars? red
- Private message default is "off," should be on. Red
- RSS Feed for News forum
- User description/location Red

Feel free to add suggestions below, I'll update as we go.

I think the default options should be changed to settings we're all more familiar with. As it stands, it's extra hassle to have to change everything.

roboninja roboninja on 08/12/2008 (permalink)

Would your "Latest Post" module be something akin to the sidebar at EvAv? That is the feature I miss the most.

torrefaction torrefaction on 08/12/2008 (permalink)

Well, we need something similar to the EvAv leaderboards, although that's a ton of actual coding work unless something generic out there.

A gametrailer code would be good too, almost as useful as youtube.

Like you mentioned in chant, we need a horizontal banner for the site.

Pretty colors, I just find them hard on the eyes after extended reading. Guess I'm too used to the black background (which, by all common rules, should be the worst background to read from).

I think actually that's pretty close. Keeping within the already established theme is important. What if you darken the colors so the orange is deeper and the blue is more navy?

Spectre7 Spectre7 on 08/12/2008 (permalink)

Gimme a couple minutes. I do worry about darkening orange, though... Orange and yellow both have a tendency to look dirty when you take the value down.

Something like the orange color that EvAv subscribers get for their name.

A little darker and that looks sweet, I also would like to compliment whomever designed this:

And that Beaker video almost made me bust a gut.

GrinR GrinR on 08/12/2008 (permalink)

Tough call. Doesn't vBulletin allow multiple themes?

I think generally the darker colored forums are easier to read and are more approachable, but then I also agree that keeping colors consistant is important.

bone bone on 08/12/2008 (permalink)

Thing is, that orange and blue would look great against a black background! But I don't want to step on the artist's toes if there is a set "style bible" in place. Multiple themes would be nice though.

There's no style bible that I'm aware of... and in fact, Siraris and I haven't had a chance to talk about it yet. I'm just tossing some things at the wall, and seeing what stick. And yes, I was trying to work inside the established color theme -- I was working under the assumption that http://www.playitreviewit.com is styled pretty much how he wants it.

Something a little different. I'm definitely still in rough experiment mode.

I'd like users to display a little more individuality. While not necessarily avatars, something to help differentiate some people from others would work well. As things are at the moment, I cannot distinguish moderators from users! The little black text underneath the username isn't very noticeable. I don't think having coloured text like on evilavatar.com is a good idea. How about small (16 x 16 px) icons next to people's names?

Spectre7 Spectre7 on 08/12/2008 (permalink)

Here's an attempt with the apparently much desired dark body & light-text. As I mentioned earlier, orange doesn't really survive being darkened. In fact, dark orange has a name... we call it brown.

The fix? Swap the color positions.

Color aside, my big suggestion is adjustable titles below our forum names instead of assigned ones. I don't like having a label assigned to me that I can't control. The post count is already there, so why have a label, a title, that represents how many posts you've made?

In terms of color scheme, I kind of like the "peach" Spectre used above. But Night would also look ok.

Ludoc Ludoc on 08/12/2008 (permalink)

I definitely prefer Night.

Edit: And as long as we're talking about changes we want to see:
I really like forums that show the user's location. It is a good way to add context to people's posts.

There seems to be a whole lot of empty space between our user titles and join date. The top of everyone's posts feel empty. If I want info about a poster I currently need to look to opposite edges of the screen. The name, post count, etc should really be together.

bone bone on 08/12/2008 (permalink)

Evening is clearly the best, by 2/3.

There is an option in User CP>Settings & Options>Edit Options. It is marked "Enable Private Messaging" and it is unchecked by default. I tried sending a PM to Slack and received this error message:
Slack3r78 has chosen not to receive private messages or may not be allowed to receive private messages. Therefore you may not send your message to him/her.

If you are trying to send this message to multiple recipients, remove Slack3r78 from the recipient list and send the message again.

In regards to private messaging (and other options) the way I have it now, I control the registration process from the main site. Because of this, vbulletin doesn't control the options that are set, and the way it was being set before was to one default thingamadoodle that was wrong. What I am doing now is starting EVERY user off with a set of options (including having private messaging enabled) and they can then go in and shut off or leave or change what they want.

Regardless, everyone should have private messaging enabled now.

Everyone gets hot-headed, even admins / mods. I propose that if an event occurs that an admin is personally vested in and action needs to be taken, the admin does what he needs to do for the immediate effect (temp ban, perma ban, delete posts, lock thread, etc.). Then he should pass the damage control over to another admin who isn't involved. This way we avoid creating a further hostile environment since a cool-headed 3rd party is now handling the situation.

News posting is now available on the front page. There is a link in the Welcome pod. Please let me know if you have any problems, or if you have any recommendations for improvements or changes.

I will also be putting this in the News Forum as a sticky for the time being.

Hey Siraris, is there a way we could get the "comments" section in the News posts to link to the News Forum? Having a News Forum with threads and News front page stories with comments seems redundant.

torrefaction torrefaction on 08/14/2008 (permalink)

That's harder work. We're going to try to link to similar forum posts in the news until that can be sorted out.

Would it be possible to turn the "comments" off and just make your own link in the news story that goes to the forum thread? Or even just make the "Read More" part link to the thread?

We'll need to discuss this more, and it is something I have been struggling with. Don't you think it breaks continuity to have to come in to the forum in order to comment?

EternalGamer EternalGamer on 08/14/2008 (permalink)

Yeah, it might. But it would do so less if the default color schemes matched better.

Regardless, personally, I think it would be a better "quick fix" than having two separate conversations on each news story going on simultaneously in the "comments" and in the "news thread," especially given how small the pool of active posters currently is.

I'm with EG Siraris. It's important to have a single point of discussion in my eyes. That's why so many people ended up signing up to EvAv. And since the logins are integrated, it doesn't break continuity so much...although maybe EG is right, and the default theme should be more consistent with the front page (Or vice versa.)

Is there a way we could tie the logins of your forum id and Piri id together? So when you log into one it automatically logs you into the other? I don't know if it's supposed to do that already or not but I need to log into each separately.

Mine doesn't, but now that I think about it, it might be because I don't have "Remember Me" on at work and I speculate that whatever cookie stems from that is how the two are linked.

Other request then: Can we change spoiler text to match the post background? Finding them is like a little bit of easter in every post. :p

Edit: So how come I can't change my profile details without entering a "parent email" now? I think that's mistakenly marked as a required field.

Mortis Mortis on 08/15/2008 (permalink)

This has probably been mentioned but some sort of color formatting for the comments posts on the main page would be nice. It all kinda runs together.

So, I don't know much about web design and all that jazz...but there are mini-icons that identify tons of sites. They appear at the very left end of the address bar.

PIRI doesn't have one yet. I'd like one. I used to have EvAv in my favorites, and the red eye logo appeared in it as a mini icon. I've added PIRI, but it's mini icon is a tiny blank page.

Thanks

Such a thing is called a Favicon, and I think I can take care of that. I've got a lot of little graphics to fabricate this weekend, so I can just toss that on the list.

I'd like avatars, as has already been covered, but I'd suggest that if you do add them, you move the user names and info down to the side of posts rather than on top, as it adds more scrolling than necessary.

Also: No avatars, please, thanks.

I know it has already been stated, but I would enjoy a Recent Posts sidebar, and an RSS feed for the news.

I doubt anyone agrees with me, but I actually prefer the existing skin? I know it is generic, but that is not necessarily a bad thing while reading at work. In fact, if it could be more generic and bland looking, I would like it. Like, it was designed to look like a spreadsheet.

I seem to recall a similar idea, many moons ago at EvAv, involving a skin designed to look like an Office document. I thought it was a great idea then, and I still do.

How's that guys? Posts are on the left instead of the top.

I'm working on the recent posts and integrating news with the forums. Ideally, people will submit their post, a mod will copy paste it into the news section, and it will cross post to the front page. Comments will be from the forums.

No big deal, I haven't either. It is actually a hassle to do so. Ideally, it will work the way mentioned above. That way, you make one post in the forum, and then it's displayed in the forum and the front page. I don't know if you will be able to comment on the front page or not, but if not, I'll just link to the forum page if you wish to leave a comment, and at least display the comments on the front page that have been left in the forums.

I agree, Mr Peanut, but it seems more people wanted it this way than the old way, so I changed it. I wish there was a way to allow you to choose, but it doesn't look like it.
