YAY
The humor and gameplay from the Phoenix Wright series remains intact.
The graphics have been given a slight upgrade. It's nothing amazing, and the judge looks completely unchanged (which may have been a conscious decision), but it's definitely a noticeable difference overall.
There are new ways to interact with evidence and crime scenes. I especially like how you can now rotate evidence and inspect it for anything suspicious. It's also fun to dust for prints and look for blood...
BOO
...except you hardly get to do these things, and when you do, the game holds your hand the entire time. In future Ace Attorney games, I'd like to have a little more freedom to investigate things as I see fit instead of having everything spoon-fed to me.
The characters aren't awful, but a lot of them just don't seem as fun as their counterparts in the previous Ace Attorney games. As the new detective, Ema has her moments, but is nowhere near as funny as Gumshoe, and Gavin just doesn't measure up to the memorable prosecutors of the past like Edgeworth or the Von Karmas.
There are still too many times where it feels like presenting evidence is a matter of guessing, as opposed to figuring it out using the clues from the testimony.
BOTTOM LINE
It's kind of strange to meet a whole new cast of characters but have the gameplay be basically the same as previous Ace Attorney games, but if you like the Phoenix Wright series then you should also enjoy Apollo Justice.
HAIKU REVIEW
Apollo Justice
Good, but not great like Phoenix
I miss you, Edgeworth.
