Throughout this review I make a lot of coparisons between Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones. I do this mostly because I feel that people who loved Lego SW will be the people who are most interested in checking out Lego Indy.
YAY
Thwarting the plans of the Third Reich, Lego style (before the game was released, some people made a fuss over the fact that the enemies weren't explicity displayed as being Nazis, but it's a moot point. The enemies in the game goose step! Of course they are Nazis! I HATE those guys!)
A REALLY surprising amount of characters to chose from (many of which have their own unique animations for things like jumping, rolling, etc.).
Lots of fun to play with a friend because of the drop-in drop-out co-op system.
Free Play mode is great, because you have to utilize so many of the unique character skills (i.e. using shovels, wrenches, whips, etc).
Short and sweet gameplay. The levels aren't very long and the puzzles aren't very hard, but the game is a great way to spend fifteen minutes between working on other stuff.
When replaying levels, you can get what you came for (Lego studs, artefact pieces, mail boxes, etc.), then save and exit. There's no need to finish the level for a second time just to get the unlockables.
Barnett College is a better hub than the cantina from Lego Star Wars.
BOO
Even moreso than Lego Star Wars, the levels seem tailor-made for free play (where you can switch between characters and solve all the puzzles) as opposed to story mode (where you are stuck with only certain characters, and have to bypass a lot of secrets). This normally isn't a problem, but there were a lot of levels where I just tried to rush through them as fast as possible just to get them out of the way.
The unlockable extras are nowhere near as fun as the ones from Lego Star Wars (i.e. new spaceships, the big destructable lego city, etc)
The game is pretty short. This can be a good thing if you just want to get a bunch of achievement points and move on to something else, but it makes the game more of a rental and less of a purchase.
BOTTOM LINE
Lego Star Wars is a great game, and it seems to me that a a lot of people compared Lego Indiana Jones unfavorably to it when the latter was released. Lego Indy may not be as massive as Lego SW, but it is no less awesome. I have noticed that my gaming habits are starting to shift towards shorter experiences, so Lego Indiana Jones was just what the doctor ordered. Bring on Lego Batman!
